It was named after Tun Raja Uda bin Raja Muhammad, a Malayan statesman who became the first Yang di-Pertua Negeri for Penang. Styled Raja Tun Uda, he is a distant cousin of Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah, the 7th Sultan of Selangor and second Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia (14 April to 1 Sept 1960).
