Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society

Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society is a Chinese religious organisation located at Jalan Macalister in Penang. It is the most popular place for the Chinese in Penang to register their marriages. Often mass weddings are held there as well.

The Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society is a society of a religious sect called Teik Kau. It spread south from China in 1954 to open a branch in Singapore. Followers in Singapore came to Penang to establish the Teik Kau Religious Sect, called Che Hoon Khor. It was located at an upstairs room at 346 Beach Street. From there, it moved to Kampung Baru, at the home of a follower, Liu Si Ping. The society was registered in 1956. In 1957, the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society acquired a house at 34 Noordin Street to be their premises. There they started to spread their faith as well as engaged in community and charitable work. In 1969, the leader of Che Hoon Khor and five of the followers acquired the 3-hectare site at 360 Macalister Road, which is the present premises. There was a bungalow there which was used as the society headquaters. As the society continued to grow, Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society required a bigger premise. One of their leaders, Dato' Tan Chee Hwa initiated a building fund. Unfortunately, he passed away before the dream could be realised. The subsequent leader and followers continued the work. In 1997, construction of the present building of the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society began. There was an economic slowdown during that year, so it an uphill task to solicit funds for the new building. The new building alone cost over RM7 million. On 9 June 2001, the then Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon officiated in the opening of the new building. Within the new building are many facilities including a library, tuition centre, kindergarten and dispensary.
