Hospital Batu GajahOne of the British-era buildings within the Hospital Batu Gajah complex (18 June, 2011)

Batu Gajah Hospital (GPS: 4.47937, 101.03415) is one of the oldest hospitals in Perak. It was built during the British colonial era. It occupies a 55-acre piece of land in Bukit Changkat, Batu Gajah.

In the beginning, there was racial segregation, with one part of the hospital reserved for European patients. This is for treating the British colonial officers as well as European estate managers. In the beginning, the Asian medical staff of the hospital was sourced from India and Sri Lanka. During the Japanese occupation, the hospital was a torture site for prisoners of war.

Once a general hospital, the Batu Gajah Hospital lost that status, becoming a district hospital when the Ipoh Hospital became the new general hospital for Perak in 1976. It is still among the biggest hospital in the state.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
