Fujairah (Arabic: الفجيرة) is the only emirate of the United Arab Emirates that faces the Gulf of Oman rather than the Persian Gulf. Ruled by Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, it has a population of 130,000 people.
Fujairah was the last emirates to join the Trucial States when it entered treaty relations with Britain in 1902. It was one of the founding emirates of the UAE in 1971. Unlike the other emirates, which are predominantly covered by low-lying desert facing the coast, Fujairah is mountainous. It therefore receives more rain, enabling agriculture to be a viable option.
