Tim's Taste Test

21 May, 2014: My wife and I happened to be at 1st Avenue Mall, so we decided to have our dinner at the Sakae Sushi outlet there. Believe it or not, this is only the second time we were at Sakae Sushi. (The first time was at Queensbay Mall, but it was so long ago that I don't have any recollection of the meal).

We thought the restaurant was quite crowded when we arrived, but later learned that it appeared crowded because they seat everybody in sequence, so all the cubicles closest to the entrance are occupied. We have just had a Japanese meal at Rakuzen in Gurney Paragon a few days ago, so we were keen to make a comparison.

My wife ordered the Curry Katsu Jyu (breaded chicken cutlet with Japanese curry, RM13.90) while I ordered the Chicken Kamameshi (chicken teriyaki & mushroom, RM15.90) In addition, we had a few plates of sushi from the belt. Our bill came to RM58.75. In my opinion, that's pretty pricey for a "casual meal".

In comparison, we paid about RM84 for our meal at Rakuzen. However, I feel I got a better value at Rakuzen than at Sakae Sushi. At Rakuzen, we had the kaiseki (懐石 ) set meal, with little bowls and sauces of items, in a formal setting, while at Sakae Sushi, it is more a casual dining experience with a selection of sushi (すし ) on the kaiten-zushi (回転寿司 ) or "sushi conveyor belt".

Among the dishes we tried included a plate of uramaki (裏巻 ) and one of the gunkanmaki (軍艦巻 ). It doesn't matter that Sakae Sushi has outlets in three countries, but though our meal at Razukan cost more, we feel it was of better value compared to that of Sakae Sushi - but if truth be told, we prefer the lunch buffet at Kampachi at Hotel Equatorial over Rakuzen, though it's double the price.
