Austral Islands are the southernmost cluster of islands within French Polynesia. They have a land area of 148 sq km (57.1 sq mi) and a population of 6,500 people (2012 estimate). The capital of Austral Islands is Tubuai.
Austral Islands are divided into two groups, the Tubuai Islands to the northwest and the Bass Islands to the southeast. The Tubuai Islands include Îles Maria, Rimatara and Rurutu. The Bass Islands comprise Rapa Iti and Marotiri.
