Mingalazedi Pagoda, Bagan (24 November, 2003)
Mingalazedi is a Burmese pagoda located a short distance to the south of the ancient walled city of Bagan. It is the last great stupa erected during the Era of the Temple Builders. Mingalazedi was built by King Narathihapate, the last king to reign over the whole Burmese empire. It was constructed in 1277, completed in 1284. Ten years after Mingalazedi was completed, the Bagan kingdom collapsed at the hands of the Mongols invaders.
Mingalazedi's stupa rises above three terraces on a square superstructure. From the middle of each side are stairs that lead up. Small stupas in the shape of Indian
kalasa pots (pots of plenty) stand at the corners of each terrace. At the corners of the uppermost terrace are four larger stupas. The terraces are adorned with terracotta tiles with scenes from the Jataka.
