Terengganu Inscription Stone is the oldest Malay artifact to be written in Jawi. It was discovered by accident in a village at Sungai Tersat,
Kuala Berang in 1899 by an Arab trader, Sayid Husin bin Ghulam al-Bokhari, after a flash floor in Kuala Berang. Until the value of the Terengganu Inscription Stone was appreciated, it was used as a stone mat for entering the house. As a result, part of it chipped away. The Terengganu Inscription Stone is said to have been written in Arabic Malay on 22 February, 1303, making it the oldest Malay writing in Jawi in existence.
The Terengganu State Government has been lobbying for the Terengganu Inscription Stone to be returned to the state. It was eventually returned in 1991, and is now on display at the
Terengganu State Museum.
