Semenyih is a rapidly developing township located in the southeastern part of Selangor, within the Hulu Langat District. Once a quiet rural settlement surrounded by plantations, it has transformed into a major suburban area as part of the Greater Kuala Lumpur metropolitan region. The town’s growth has been driven by its strategic position near Kajang, Bangi, and Putrajaya, as well as the presence of the University of Nottingham Malaysia campus. 1
The origins of Semenyih date back to the 19th century when it was founded as a small Malay agricultural village along the Semenyih River. The name “Semenyih” is believed to come from the Malay word “menyih”, meaning “to hide,” possibly referring to its remote and secluded early setting. 2
In the latter half of the 20th century, Semenyih remained primarily rural, known for its rubber and palm oil plantations. However, the construction of expressways and the expansion of nearby townships such as Kajang and Bangi triggered rapid suburbanization. By the 2000s, large housing estates like Taman Pelangi Semenyih, Bandar Rinching, and Setia EcoHill emerged, transforming the area into a modern residential hub. 3
Semenyih retains a balance between its old-town charm and new urban development. The town centre still features traditional shop lots, markets, and eateries that reflect its heritage. Meanwhile, modern gated communities, educational institutions, and industrial areas have reshaped the outskirts. 4
The area’s landscape is characterised by gently rolling terrain with scenic views of surrounding hills. The presence of green zones such as the Semenyih Dam and the Broga Hills adds to its appeal as a place for recreation and nature tourism. 5
The property market in Semenyih has grown significantly since the mid-2010s, fuelled by spillover demand from Kajang and Putrajaya. Residential projects by major developers, including SP Setia and EcoWorld, have introduced township-style developments featuring modern amenities and eco-friendly designs. 3
Due to its relative affordability and proximity to educational institutions such as University of Nottingham Malaysia and Tenby International School, Semenyih attracts both young families and students. Commercial zones like EcoHill Taipan and Semenyih Sentral have also enhanced its local economy. 6
Semenyih is well connected by major expressways and arterial roads. The Cheras–Kajang Expressway (E7) and Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (E18) provide links toward Kuala Lumpur, while the Kajang–Seremban Expressway (E21) connects it to Nilai and Seremban. 5
Public transportation options include bus routes operated by RapidKL, and the nearest MRT access points are in Kajang and Sungai Jernih. The proposed extension of rail services toward southern Hulu Langat may further enhance its connectivity in the future. 6
The town of Semenyih gained national attention when a massive 400-million-year-old quartz ridge, part of the Broga Hills landscape, was identified as one of the oldest geological formations in the region. 5
