History of Sunway Pyramid
Sunway Pyramid first opened its doors in 1997 as Malaysia’s first themed shopping and leisure mall. Developed by the Sunway Group, it was built on a rehabilitated former mining site as part of the broader Bandar Sunway township project. The mall’s distinctive Egyptian design, featuring sphinxes, hieroglyph-inspired decorations, and the massive lion-head entrance, became its signature aesthetic. A major expansion in 2007 doubled its retail space, transforming it into one of the largest shopping complexes in the Klang Valley.

The architecture of Sunway Pyramid draws inspiration from ancient Egypt, with sandstone façades, decorative columns, and pyramid-like skylights that create a unique thematic experience. Inside, the mall houses more than 1,000 retail outlets, including international fashion brands, electronic stores, restaurants, and entertainment centres. One of its most famous attractions is the Sunway Pyramid Ice, an Olympic-sized indoor ice-skating rink, a rarity in Malaysia.

The lion-head structure at the entrance of Sunway Pyramid is one of the most photographed landmarks in Selangor.
