Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam is an important urban road in Ipoh, Perak. It runs from Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab in the west to Jalan Sultan Idris Shah in the east, forming part of the inner city network that connects the heart of Ipoh’s business district. It should not be confused with the similarly named Jalan Seenivasagam, which is located elsewhere in the city. 1
Running east–west through the central part of the city, Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam is a relatively short but significant road. It begins at its junction with Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab and continues eastward until it meets Jalan Sultan Idris Shah. The road features two lanes and is lined with commercial and institutional buildings, including offices, shops, and cafés that cater to daily city life. 2
The area surrounding Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam is part of Ipoh’s traditional commercial core. Many pre-war shoplots and modern offices coexist here, giving the road a mix of heritage and contemporary character. Due to its central location, it is a popular area for small businesses and professionals, with easy pedestrian access to nearby banks, eateries, and government buildings. 3
The street is named after Datuk Seri S.P. Seenivasagam (1918–1969), a respected lawyer and politician who, along with his brother D.R. Seenivasagam, co-founded the People’s Progressive Party (PPP). Both brothers were influential figures in Ipoh’s civic and political life during the mid-20th century. The naming of this road honours S.P. Seenivasagam’s contributions to the city and the nation. 4
Interestingly, Ipoh is one of the few Malaysian cities to have two roads honouring the Seenivasagam family — Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam and Jalan Seenivasagam. While the two names are often mixed up by visitors, locals can easily distinguish them, as they are located in different parts of the city. 5
Due to its central position, Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam experiences steady traffic during working hours. It provides easy access to surrounding roads such as Jalan Dato’ Onn Jaafar and Jalan Sultan Yusuff, making it a convenient connector for motorists navigating the downtown area. Pedestrians often use this road to reach nearby shops, government offices, and eateries. 6
