Eu Kong was a pioneering figure who played a crucial role in the development of early Chinese businesses in British Malaya. Born in Guangdong, China, he migrated to Malaya in search of better opportunities and quickly established himself as a successful entrepreneur.
Eu Kong was one of the key figures behind the founding of
Eu Yan Sang, a traditional Chinese medicine business that he started here in Gopeng, Perak, in 1879. His success in providing herbal remedies to the Chinese mining community laid the foundation for the growth of a family empire. Recognizing the health needs of miners, Eu Kong expanded his business and was well-regarded for his contributions to the welfare of the Chinese diaspora in Malaya. After his death in 1892, his son, Eu Tong Sen, took over the business, transforming it into a significant commercial and medical enterprise. Eu Kong's legacy is marked by his entrepreneurial vision, community care, and the long-lasting impact of Eu Yan Sang, which remains a prominent name in traditional Chinese medicine.
