Restoran dan Makanan Laut Yow Ho (2 May, 2016)
Restoran Yow Ho (GPS: 4.49168, 101.38841) is a Chinese restaurant in
Cameron Highlands. (Their older signboard of 2013 spells their name as You Hoo) It operates out of a shop along the main road in
Brinchang. It seems so odd to come across the "seafood" restaurant way up in Cameron Highlands, but that's exactly how it advertises itself. (Unfortunately, Chinese restaurants tend to use the term "seafood" when they mean "cook to order", with or without seafood).
My wife and I went out in the morning to look for breakfast. We saw that this restaurant was open to business, and a lot of people were eating there, so we went in to give it a try. I saw an empty table and quickly went over to occupy it. On the wall above us are some family photos. I saw a framed shot of the proprietor standing beside local food celebrity host,
Axian. Come to think of it, I saw a life-size Axian poster outside the restaurant. Oh goody, if Axian endorses this place, the food must be great.

There is also a newspaper clipping from
The Star dated 22 May, 2004, featuring the restaurant. The newspaper article mentions the restaurant's speciality, Indonesian curry fish. As we were there for breakfast, we will shelf that idea for another visit.

After a short wait, we were handed the menu. For breakfast time, the restaurant serves a hawker food. Here the menu:

I am actually a bit surprised by the prices. They are unexpectedly high, for the "small", which is often a mere 50 sen difference from the medium or large portions. In order that we can try as many things as possible, we ordered their "Famous Wan Tan Mee", their "Signature Prawn Mee" and their "Curry Mee".

To be honest, all three items gave us some cultural shock. To be courteous, I will say that these hawker items do not quite agree with my Penang palate. If they were sold in Penang, I would have let loose a few less pleasant adjectives to describe them. But I will consider it as a difference in taste between places. For example, we were unaccustomed to seeing items that usually go with yong tau foo being served with curry mee and prawn mee. I will put that to cultural differences. But we also found that the noodle in the prawn mee is insufficiently blanched. The wan than noodle lacks the
al dente springiness. Nevertheless, based on that newspaper clipping, I look forward to trying dinner here in future. Maybe that will give me a better experience.
