SK Convent Tanah Rata (2 May, 2016)
SK Convent Tanah Rata (GPS: 4.47059, 101.37384), officially
Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent or simply
SK Convent, at
Tanah Rata is one of the oldest and most elegant structures in
Cameron Highlands.
Today SK Convent Tanah Rata is honoured as a "sekolah berprestasi tinggi" (SBT), or "high performance school" for being among the schools that reflect the ethos, character and unique identity in all aspects of education. As with many of the older buildings in Cameron Highlands, the SK Convent's original function was as a British Army Hospital. After all, Cameron Highlands was the choice destination for those seeking respite from the heat and malaria of the lowlands, and here, the British officers can at least feel at home.
The British Army Hospital was only taken over by the Convent Primary School as late as 1971. This Roman Catholic Convent school overlooks the main road over the town of Tanah Rata. I visitied it twice one of my trips to Cameron Highlands.
