Old State Secretariat Building, Seremban (10 July, 2016)
The Old State Secretariat Building (GPS: 2.72541, 101.94352) is a heritage building in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. Located on Jalan Dato Hamzah, it housed the state public library from 1989 to 2007. In front of the building is the Seremban Cenotaph and the Seremban Town Fountain.
That Negeri Sembilan State Public Library was established on 30 July, 1952, when it was known as Sir Henry Gurney Library. At that time, it was located on Jalan Dato Abdul Malek. It was handed over to the state government of Negeri Sembilan in 1978.
In 1987, the Old State Secretariat Building was renovated to house the state public library. This building was constructed in 1912. The façade facing the roundabout measures 613 meters. This was completed in March 1988, and the library opened to the public in August 1989. With the relocation of the library, the old building on Jalan Dato Abdul Malek was demolished.
To preserve the Old State Secretariat Building as a heritage building, the State Public Library was relocated once again in 2007, into the Wisma UMNO building on Jalan Dato' Sheikh Ahmad. The rationale given was that the library would be more easily accessed by the general public.
When I visited the former Old State Secretariat Building building on Jalan Dato Hamzah in July 2016, I found it to be a little worse for wear. The building was empty and has not been readapted for use in recent times. I do not know why the building is left empty for now.
At the moment, the Old State Secretariat Building looks like an empty shell (10 July, 2016)
