Universities in Kuala Lumpur represent Malaysia’s academic and intellectual heart, offering a wide range of local and international programs in engineering, business, creative arts, and technology. University of Malaya (UM)

The University of Malaya (UM) is Malaysia’s oldest and most prestigious university, established in 1949 as part of the University of Malaya in Singapore before becoming an independent Malaysian institution in 19622. Founded by Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing in 1991, the university has campuses across several countries. Its main Malaysian campus is located in Cyberjaya, Selangor, while its Kuala Lumpur presence continues through outreach and partnerships in creative education4.

Open University Malaysia (OUM) and International University of Malaya-Wales (IUMW)

Open University Malaysia (OUM) was established in 2000 to provide flexible, distance-learning opportunities to working adults. Headquartered in Jalan Tun Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, OUM offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields such as education, business, and information technology5.

The International University of Malaya-Wales (IUMW) is a collaborative effort between OUM’s partner, the University of Malaya, and the University of Wales, established in 2013. It combines British and Malaysian education models and operates from the same premises in central Kuala Lumpur6.

Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL)

Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) is a leading technical university established in 2002 under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA). With its main campus located along Jalan Sultan Ismail and additional branch campuses throughout the Klang Valley, UniKL offers specialised programs in engineering, information technology, and industrial sciences. It collaborates closely with industries to produce technically skilled graduates7.

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK)

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) was founded in 1997 as one of Malaysia’s first private universities, named after Malaysia’s second Prime Minister. Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur at Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), UNIRAZAK offers business, finance, and entrepreneurship programs with an emphasis on leadership and innovation. It partners with international institutions to offer globally recognised qualifications8.

UTM SPACE Kuala Lumpur

UTM SPACE (School of Professional and Continuing Education) is the continuing education arm of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Its Kuala Lumpur campus is situated in Jalan Semarak, not far from the city centre. The campus offers part-time and professional development programs in engineering, management, and technology, catering primarily to working adults seeking further qualifications9.

UUM Kuala Lumpur

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) maintains its Kuala Lumpur campus as a postgraduate and executive education centre. Located along Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz in Kampung Baru, the UUM Kuala Lumpur Campus focuses on business administration, management, and public policy. It provides urban professionals with access to UUM’s programs without requiring travel to its main campus in Sintok, Kedah10.

Other Higher Education Institutions

In addition to these universities, Kuala Lumpur hosts a number of other higher education institutions including HELP University (Damansara Heights), SEGi College Kuala Lumpur (Jalan Hang Lekiu), and Asia Pacific University (APU) (Bukit Jalil). Getting Around

Many of Kuala Lumpur’s universities are easily accessible by public transport, including the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, Monorail Line, and MRT Kajang Line. Bus services operated by Rapid KL also connect campuses with nearby neighbourhoods and transit hubs12.
