Petaling Street is a pedestrian mall in the Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur. Although the name "Petaling Street" denotes the entire street which is now called Jalan Petaling, the name remains to denote the stretch that has been pedestrianized, which is between the intersection of Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock to the intersection of Jalan Sultan. It is also a metonym for the Chinatown area bordered by the two aforementioned streets along with Jalan Hang Kasturi. A canopy has also been erected to cover this stretch, and Chinese entrance gates erected on either ends of the sheltered area.
Petaling Street is known in Cantonese as Ci4 Cong2 Gaai1 in Jyutping romanisation. The name means the street of tapioca factory or mill. In Chinese characters, it is 茨廠街, and in Pinyin romanisation, Cí Chǎng Jiē. As for its Malay name, it refers to a local tree, pokok petaling (Ochanostachys amentacea), which according to Kuala Lumpur Street Names, is now extinct.
Petaling Street is a place to shop of things Chinese, from preserved meats to herbs to cheap clothing and off-branded goods. It is in fact a bazaar catering to the taste of the working class.
