Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur (28 December, 2006)
Jalan Bukit Bintang is one of the main shopping streets in Kuala Lumpur. It is named after the hill, Bukit Bintang, which is located in the area, and is today a prime commercial locality. Jalan Bukit Bintang runs in an east-west direction starting at the junction with Jalan Pudu in the west, and ending at Jalan Tun Razak in the east. Addresses are numbered from west to east, with odd numbered addresses on the right and even numbers on the left. Along its route, Jalan Bukit Bintang passes through some of the major shopping malls and hotels of the city.
Jalan Sultan Ismail is the only road that intersects with Jalan Bukit Bintang. Roads that form junctions with it, from east to west, include Jalan Delima, Jalan Kampung, Jalan Imbi, Jalan Gading, Jalan Bulan and Lorong Pudu 14 all on the south side of Jalan Bukit Bintang, while Jalan Raja Chulan, Changkat Bukit Bintang and Jalan Tong Shin are on the north side. Some roads, though not directly connected to Jalan Bukit Bintang, are also within the Bukit Bintang neighbourhood. They include the famous food street Jalan Alor.
Jalan Bukit Bintang was named after a knoll in the area. The road began as Bukit Bintang Road as early as the 1880s.1 There was a banana plantation here, followed by a quarry. That quarry site was later taken over for the construction of a girls' school, the Bukit Bintang Girls' School, which dates to 1893.2 The school was established by a British woman missionary, Miss Betty Langlands, who taught the women living in Brickfields how to read, and with that, initiated the school. The school relocated to Cheras in the year 2000, where it remains today, by the name of Sekolah Seri Bintang Utara.4 The site is then taken over for redevelopment, and the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur shopping mall stands where it was.
