Gua Cerita (GPS: 6.4576, 99.82601) consists of two limestone caves lying one above the other, both facing the sea. Like most of the places in Langkawi, Gua Cerita is steeped in legend. There is a story of a failed ploy by the Garuda (or Phoenix) to thwart the marriage of the children of the Roman and Chinese emperors (I cannot imagine how Roman and Chinese emperors came to be associated with a cave in Langkawi).

About 8 metres from the cave entrance are some inscriptions on the cave wall. The inscription tells of one Sheikh Baharuddin who died on the 9th day of the 6th month in the year 68 of the Muslim calendar. The inscription is said to date from 1754, during the reign of Sultan Mohamed Jiwa II in Kedah. There is no road to Gua Cerita, so visitors has to go by boat from Pantai Tanjung Rhu. The fare is RM80 for one hour.

Gua Cerita is on the Map of Langkawi

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
