Hutan Paya Laut, Kedah (13 February, 2005)
Hutan Paya Laut (GPS: 5.67389, 100.38748) or Coastal Mangrove is a stretch of mangrove swamps at the estuary of the Merbok River in Kedah. It covers an area of over 4,100 hectares on both sides of the Merbok estuary, and was gazetted a mangrove forest reserve on 29 September, 1951.
Hutan Paya Laut is one of the biggest coastal mangrove swamps in Peninsular Malaysia. It has the largest number of species of bakau in the world. The mangrove is also a home for 80 species of birds, of which 15 are endemic to the mangrove swamp.
