Railway stations in Johor play an important role in connecting southern Peninsular Malaysia with the rest of the country and neighboring Singapore. Situated at the crossroads of domestic rail travel and international connectivity, the stations in Johor serve both long-distance and commuter trains. From historic stations to upcoming modern projects, Johor’s rail infrastructure continues to evolve to meet the growing demand of travelers and businesses alike.
Johor Bahru is the main hub of railway activity in Johor, featuring the central station and border links to Singapore. Other towns and districts in Johor also host active railway stations, providing access to KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) Intercity and shuttle services. While some stations serve as local halts, others are vital junctions and termini that support regional travel.
Below is a list of active and notable railway stations in Johor, arranged in alphabetical order:
Several other minor halts exist across Johor, but the stations above represent the most commonly used or historically significant ones.
The most prominent station in Johor is Johor Bahru Sentral, which serves as the southern terminus for KTM’s rail services in Peninsular Malaysia. It connects directly to Singapore via the Johor-Singapore Causeway. Historically, this link was the only direct railway crossing between the two countries.
Segamat and Kluang stations are important intermediate stops on the KTM West Coast Line, while Kempas Baru serves as a key location for freight and maintenance operations.
Johor’s railway stations are primarily served by KTM, Malaysia’s national railway operator. The key services include:
The train network provides a lifeline for daily commuters, business travelers, and tourists moving between Johor, the rest of Malaysia, and Singapore.
The modernization of rail services in Johor includes plans for electrification. Currently, most of Johor’s railway lines are non-electrified and operated with diesel locomotives. However, electrification projects are underway as part of KTM’s double-tracking and modernization programs, which will bring faster, cleaner, and more reliable train services to Johor in the future.1
Johor is at the center of several transformative rail projects. Among the most important are:
The Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link is a landmark cross-border project. It will connect Johor Bahru’s upcoming Bukit Chagar Station with Singapore’s Woodlands North MRT Station. Designed to carry up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction, the RTS Link will drastically ease congestion on the Causeway and improve cross-border commuting.2
The new Bukit Chagar Station, currently under construction, will serve as the Malaysian terminus of the RTS Link. Equipped with integrated CIQ facilities, the station will allow passengers to clear both Malaysian and Singaporean immigration before boarding, enabling a smooth five-minute journey into Singapore.
Efforts are also ongoing to upgrade and double-track several sections of the railway in Johor. This will allow for higher capacity, shorter travel times, and pave the way for eventual electrification.
The Kluang Railway Station is home to one of Malaysia’s most famous coffee shops, known as the “Kluang Rail Coffee.” Operating since 1938, it has become a cultural icon where locals and travelers stop for traditional coffee and kaya toast before continuing their journey.
