Labis (GPS: 2.38178, 103.02009) is a town in
Segamat District, Johor. With a population of 20,000, Labis is the second biggest town in the district after
Segamat. It is along the main trunk road (Route 1) from Segamat to
Yong Peng. The next town is
Chaah.
The town is said to get its name from the river terrapin,
labi-labi, which British administrators wrongly pluralized as "labis". It was originally a village by the name of Kampung Paya Merah.
