Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory (GPS: 1.45671, 103.76441) is a very popular bakery on Jalan Tan Hiok Nee in downtown Johor Bahru. The bakery was founded in 1919, meaning - as I write this in 2018 - it is just a year shy of its 100th anniversary. Despite its popularity - it is not uncommon to see long queues forming in front of the shop, with customers eager to get their hands on this bakery's products, the shop continues to operate in its age-old premises.

The bakery business is said to have been established by an Englishman, and the present owner's grandfather started off by working for that person. It was only in 1930 that the grandfather took over the business, when the original owner decided to return to England. Apart from a lapse of three years during the Japanese Occupation, Hiap Joo Bakery has been serving generations of Johor Bahru people.

The present popularity of Hiap Joo Bakery can be attributed to present-day mass media, to be exact, after it was featured on TV in a U Channel documentary. This has help ignite an interest among the younger generation for its firewood-baked loaves. The speciality of Hiap Joo Bakery is its banana cake, undoubtedly its best selling item. This is one item that sells off, literally, like hot cakes.

Hiap Joo Bakery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 7:30am to 5:30pm, with reduced hours on Sunday, from 8:30am to 11:00am, and on Mondays, from 12:00pm to 5:30pm.
