Pavlodar (Kazakh/Russian: Павлодар), the capital of Pavlodar, is a city on the northeastern part of
Kazakhstan. It is located 350 km to the northeast of Kazakh capital
Astana, and 400 km upriver from the
Russian city of Omsk along the Irtysh River. It has a population of around 332,000 people (2012 estimate).
As with many cities in Kazakhstan, Pavlodar began as an outpost of the Russian Empire. It was founded in 1720 and was originally called Koryakovsky. Its founding was to protect the valuable salt lakes in the area, and the city developed as a major salt producer.
Under Soviet rule, Pavlodar industrialized. It was a manufacturer of farm machinery and had aluminium as well as chemical industries. Due to the sensitivity of the industries in the city, Pavlodar was closed to foreigners until 1992, when the Soviet Union collapsed.
