Oral (Kazakh: Орал, Russian: Уральск/Uralsk) is a city at the confluence of the Ural and Chogan Rivers in northwestern Kazakhstan, close to the border with Russia. Today it has a population of around 350,000 people (2012 estimate).
Oral was founded in 1613 by Cossacks. Until 1775 it was known as Яицк (Yaitsk) until 1775. It was known as Uralsk until 1991, when the name Oral - a Kazakh translation of Uralsk - was popularized.
