Henderson Island is a territory of the United Kingdom in the eastern South Pacific that has been recognised as a World Heritage Site. Part of the Pitcairn Islands colony, the island is one of the few atolls in the world where the ecology has not been touched by human presence. This is because it is too small and too steep to allow agriculture. Being an extremely isolated place, Henderson Island allows scientists to study insular evolution and natural selection.

Although Henderson Island appears to be virtually not habitable, archaeologists have discovered evidence of a small permanent Polynesian colony located there between the 12th and the 15th century. Why the settlement was abandoned is unknown.

Henderson Island was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 12th session of the World Heritage Committee Brasilia, Brazil, on 5 - 9 December, 1988.
