Shropshire is a ceremonial county in West Midlands, England. Landlocked, it is bordered by Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the southeast, Herefordshire to the south and Wales to the west. Covering 3,487 sq km (1,346 sq mi), Shropshire has a population of only 454,900. It is among the most rural and sparsely populated counties in England.

The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a scenic area in the county. It covers almost a quarter of the area on the southern part of Shropshire. Shropshire is also the home to the Ironbridge Gorge, which is today a World Heritage Site.

Shropshire has seen human habitation going back to the Celtic age, with evidence of an iron age kingdom located here, probably at The Wrekin. The Celtic settlements came under Roman rule in the 2nd century, when one of its towns, Viroconium Cornoviorum, became one of the largest settlements in Britain.

Following Norman Conquest in 1066, large areas of Shropshire were given to the Normans. Under the Normans, a number of towns were established, along with defensive castles and fortifications. Historically significant towns in Shropshire include Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Oswestry. The area around Coalbrookdale is also of historical significance, as the Industrial Revolution is said to have started there.

Visiting Shropshire

You can easily reach Shropshire by taking the A49 road which runs from Herefordshire to Lancashire. There is a direct train service from London to Shrewsbury in Shropshire. The journey takes about four hours, and you will get to enjoy the scenid landscape along the way.
