Penrith is a market town in the Eden Valley, in
Cumbria, England. It is just 5 km (3 miles) from the boundaries of the Lake District National Park, to the north of River Eamont. The town has a population of around 15,000 people (2012 estimate).
The Penrith area has been settled since at least the Roman period, as evidence in the Roman road passing through the area between
Manchester and
Carlisle.
Today Penrith is reliant on the tourist trade for its economy. The town holds market days on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with a Farmers' Market held once a month.
