The history of Lancaster goes back to Roman times, when it was a settlement called Calunium. There is not much that is known about the settlement until the Norman Conquest of the 11th century. It was given its charter as a market town and borough in 1193, and only granted city status in 1937.
Today Lancaster is a modern city with a rich history. It is a center for the surrounding farming region, producing machinery for farming and agriculture. In recent decade it is also developing the high tech sector. The city gives its name to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
