County Durham is a ceremonial county in
North East England. It covers 2,676 sq km (1,033 sq mi) and has a population of 511,000 people (2012 estimate). The county town is
Durham while the largest town is
Darlington.
County Durham is bordered by
Northumberland and
Tyne and Wear to the north,
Cumbria to the west and
North Yorkshire to the south.
County Durham is the only county in England to have the prefix "County" attached to it. Most English counties are suffixed with "shire". County Durham was known simply as Durham, the same as its county town, until 1997, when it officially became known as County Durham.
