Bognor Regis is a seaside resort in Arun district, in
West Sussex, on the south coast of England. Located some 89 km (56 mi) to the southwest of London, it covers 4.86 sq km (1.88 sq mi) and has a population of 23,000 people (2012 estimate). It is often known simply as Bognor.
Bognor Regis dates back to the Anglo Saxon period. In fact it is one of the oldest documented Anglo Saxon place names in Sussex, having been recorded as early as AD 680. The name Bognor roughly translates as "landing place".
Bognor was part of the ancient parish of South Bersted until 1828, when it attained a separate parish status of its nown. It developed as a seaside destination in the 19th century, and in 1929 was chosen as the royal convalescence resort for King George V. As a result, the king bestowed upon it the suffix "Regis" which is Latin for "of the King".
