Tuapse (Russian: Туапсе́) is a coastal town on the Black Sea in Russia. It is in the federal subject of Krasnodar Krai between Gelendzhik to the north and Sochi to the south. Occupying an area of 33.41 sq km (12.9 sq mi), it has a population of 63,000 people (2012 estimate).
The history of Tuapse goes back to 1838, when the Russians built the fort of Velyaminovsky in the area. This was after the coastal strip came under Russian rule following the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-29. Later on, the Ottomans seized the fort during the Crimean War (1857-59). Nonetheless the Russians managed to hang on to the coastal strip, and they established the settlement of Tuapse there in 1864.
