Lipetsk (Russian: Ли́пецк) is a city on the banks of the Voronezh River in western Russia. The administrative center of Lipetsk Oblast, it is 438 km (272 mi) to the southeast of Moscow. The city covers 318 sq km (123 sq mi) and has a population of 508,000 people (2012 estimate).
The history of Lipetsk goes back to the 13th century. Its name, which means "linden city", carries the same meaning as the cities of
Leipzig and
Liepāja. As with many cities in the region, it was in the path of the Mongols and was destroyed by them in 1284. The rebuilt city was where Peter the Great built a cast iron factory in 1703.
Today the industries of Lipetsk is centered around ferrous metallurgy, machinery and metalworking. The city also attracts tourist with the oldest mud bath and balneological resorts in Russia, opened since 1805.
