Larissa is a city in central Greece. It is the capital of the
Thessaly periphery as well as the Larissa prefecture. The city of 150,000 (2011 estimate) is the fourth largest city in Greece. It is an important transportation hub for Greece, due to its centralized location. It is also the main agricultural centre of the country.

According to Greek mythology, Larissa was founded by Acrisius, who was accidentally killed by his son Perseus. It is where Achilles was born and where Hippocrates died.
Evidence of Paleolithic settlement has been discovered around Larissa. The region has been extremely productive for centuries, playing a role as an agricultural region since antiquity. Larissa became part of the Kingdom of Greece in 1881.
