The Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, or Iglesia de Santa Maria la Coronada de Gibraltar, is the primary place of worship for the Catholic community in Gibraltar. The cathedral can trace its origin back to 1462 when the Spanish built a place of worship on the site of an old mosque, which was larger than the present cathedral. The cathedral was severely damaged during the Great Siege. When it was reconstructed in 1810, the opportunity was taken also to widen Main Street.

The towers that we see on the cathedral were added in 1820. The façade dates back to 1931, when the cathedral was restored, and the present façade erected to replace the one built in 1810.
