Festung Hohensalzburg, also known as Hohensalzburg Castle or Hohensalzburg Fortress, is the castle on the hill in the World Heritage Site of Salzburg, Austria. The fortress on the peak of Festungsberg was built in the 11th century at the time when the Holy Roman Empire was waging a way against the Papacy. Measuring 250 meters long and 150 meters wide, Festung Hohensalzburg is one of the biggest medieval castles in Europe.

Festung Hohensalzburg was a refuge for the archbishops of Salzburg whenever they felt threatened. Originally built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein, the castle owes its present appearance to 16th century Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach.

In the 20th century, Festung Hohensalzburg was used as a prison. Italian prisoners of war were held here during World War I. Since then it has been preserved as a tourist attraction. There is a cable car that goes up to it from the village of Hasengrabenbastei.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
