Kukës is a city in northeastern
Albania. Located at an elevation of 320 m (1,050 ft), it has a population of around 17,000 (2011 estimate). The city came to international attention during the Kosovo conflict, when its population was overwhelmed by 450,000 refugees from Kosovo. This led to it becoming the first town to ever be nominated for the Nobel Peace prize.
The present town of Kukës dates to 1976, when the entire town had to be relocated to make way for a lake created by the hydroelectric scheme. Among the sites within the small town including ancient Illyrian tombs found near Këneta. Other sights in Kukës include an Ottoman market center.
