Rhinoceros Lake (Simplified/Traditional Chinese: 犀牛海; Pinyin: Xīniú Hǎi) is part of
Shuzheng Lakes, which is a series of ribbon lakes in
Jiuzhaigou Valley, along with
Tiger Lake and Unknown Lake. These lakes were formed by glacier. The second largest lake in Jiuzhaigou, Rhinoceros Lake is located at an elevation of 2315 meters and has a depth reaching 12 meters. The volume of water in Rhinoceros Lake is the same throughout the year.
According to legend, a Tibetan lama rode a rhinoceros to the banks of the lake, and was so absorbed by the beauty of the lake that he rode his rhinocerous right into the lake, giving the Rhinoceros Lake its name.
