Du Fu's Thatched Cottage, Chengdu

Du Fu's Thatched Cottage is the thatched cottact of Du Fu (AD 712-770), the prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty. The cottage, which was his former residence and retreat, is in Chengdu.

Du Fu relocated to Sichuan in the winter of AD 759 to take refuge there. He built a thatched hut along the bank of the Huanhua Stream. There he stayed for 3 years and 9 months, and while there, he composed more than 240 poems. Many of these poems had the cottage as the subject.

The original cottage has naturally disappeared a long time ago. Nevertheless the site of that cottage has undergone renovations as early as the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was enlarged over time, into its present size to include a bamboo garden, several pavilions, and a number of bridges. The total area of the grounds is about 200,000 square meters. Within the grounds is the replica of the cottage, rebuilt in the Han period style. Within the courtyard are plum trees and bamboo groves. There are also streams and bridges with many scenic spots.
