As with the many other cities in Montana, Whitefish established and prospered because of the Great Northern Railway, which was built through it in 1904. In the early days, Whitefish was a logging town. Then in the late 1940s the Big Mountain ski resort was built, helping to usher in the tourism industry to the city.
