Tuscaloosa is a city on the western central part of Alabama. It is located on the Black Warrior River, and is the fifth largest city in Alabama. It was named after a chieftain of the Choctaw tribe who was defeated by Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1540. White settlement of the Tuscaloosa area came about following the War of 1812.

Tuscaloosa has a population of around 95,000 people (2011 estimate) and a metropolitan population exceeding 210,000. It is home to the University of Alabama, one of the top public universities in the United States, with an enrollment of over 30,000 students. Tuscaloosa also has the first Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in North America.

If you're coming by plane, the nearest main airport is the Birmingham International Airport, located 60 miles to the northeast of Tuscaloosa. From there you can take a bus to the city. If you're driving, take interstate highway I-59 or I-20.
