Puerto Rico, or officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is an unincorporated territory of the United States. It is composed of the main island of Puerto Rico, and a number of smaller islands in an archipelago, among them Vieques, Culebra and Mona. The island of Puerto Rico is within the Greater Antilles. It has a total area of 3,515 sq mi (9,104 sq km).

Puerto Rico has a population of about 4 million people (2010 estimate). Its capital and largest city is San Juan. The Puerto Ricans are mostly of Spanish origin. There is also a substantial population of Blacks, accounting for 6.9% of the population.

The US Dollar is the official currency of Puerto Rico. It is in the Atlantic Standard Time (AST) zone (-4 GMT). The abbreviation of Puerto Rico is PR, and its Internet TLD is .pr.

Travel to and within Puerto Rico

Being a US Territory, Puerto Rico does not require US Citizens to bring a passport for travel there. A driver's license is sufficient. Non US Citizens do not require a visa if traveling from a US state to Puerto Rico, but bringing a valid passport is advisable. Travelers from outside the United States should follow the same requirement for entering the U.S.

By Plane
The main airport for Puerto Rico is the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) near San Juan. It takes 2.5 hours to reach Puerto Rico from Miami, 4 hours from New York City, 7.5 hours from Los Angeles, and 12 hours from London.

By Road
As public transportation on Puerto Rico can be described as "wanting", you should consider renting a car if you wish to explore the island on your own extensively. There are free highways as well as toll highways, called autopistas, in Puerto Rico. The toll for a normal sedan car is around $0.50 to $1.50.
