Travel to and within Puerto Rico
Being a US Territory, Puerto Rico does not require US Citizens to bring a passport for travel there. A driver's license is sufficient. Non US Citizens do not require a visa if traveling from a US state to Puerto Rico, but bringing a valid passport is advisable. Travelers from outside the United States should follow the same requirement for entering the U.S.
By Plane
The main airport for Puerto Rico is the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) near San Juan. It takes 2.5 hours to reach Puerto Rico from Miami, 4 hours from New York City, 7.5 hours from Los Angeles, and 12 hours from London.
By Road
As public transportation on Puerto Rico can be described as "wanting", you should consider renting a car if you wish to explore the island on your own extensively. There are free highways as well as toll highways, called
autopistas, in Puerto Rico. The toll for a normal sedan car is around $0.50 to $1.50.
