Pendleton is a city in Umatilla County in northeastern Oregon. Covering 10.1 sq mi (26 sq km), it has a population approaching 17,000 people (2011 estimate).

Pendleton experiences a semi-arid climate. Winters here are cool and short while summers are hot. July is the hottest month, when average high temperature rises to 87.7°F (30.9°C). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature drops to 27.4°F (-2.6°C). Annual precipitation stands at only 12.76 in (324 mm).

The history of Pendleton goes back to the mid-19th century. A trading post was established at the mouth of McKay Creek by Dr William C McKay in 1851. The original village was named Marshall, after a local store owner. It was renamed Pendleton in 1865, in honor of George H Pendleton, the Democratic candidate for Vice President in the 1864 presidential campaign.

As with many American towns in the 19th century, Pendletown started off as a trading post and lumber mill. It is the site of a prison, the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, where the Prison Blue denim fabric was manufactured.
