Parkersburg is the third largest city in West Virginia. Located in Wood County on the central-western part of the state, it covers 12.2 sq mi (31.6 sq km) and has a population of 31,500 people (2012 estimate). It serves as county seat of Wood County.
Parkersburg is across the Ohio River from the state of Ohio. The Little Kanawha River forms a confluence with the Ohio River in the city, dividing it into the north and south sides.

July is the hottest month in Parkersburg, when the average high temperature rises to 85.8°F (29.9°C). It also gets the most rain, at 4.58 in (116.3 mm). January is the coldest month, when average low temperature drops to 22.3°F (-5.4°C).
Parkersburg dates back to the late 18th century. It was originally named Newport, but was renamed Parkersburg in 1810, in honor of Alexander Parker, a hero in the Revolutionary War who was given land in the area. The town was rechartered as a city in 1860.

Parkersburg is served by Interstate 77. You can reach the city by leaving the I-77 at Exits 173, 174 and 176.

State park on Blennerhassett Island, in the Ohio River. It is the site of the Palladian mansion owned by namesake Harman Blennerhassett.
