Upper Midtown, on the eastern side of
Manhattan, is an area with churches, synagogues, museums and grand hotels. You can find some cutting-edge skyscrapers here and pockets of expensive residences. It was once the home of the rich and famous, such as the Astor and Vanderbilt.
In the 1950's, the first of many trend-setting skyscrapers was built in Upper Midtown. More was to follow, changing the neighborhood from a largely residential to one of upscale offices.
