The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is a stock exchange located at 11 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It was founded in 1792 when 24 stock brokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement, so named because it took place under the buttonwood tree outside 68 Wall Street. Today it has 2,764 listed securities. With a market capitalization of US$13.39 trillion (as of December, 2010), it is the world's biggest stock exchange by market capitalization.

When the 24 stock brokers met in 1792, they formed an organization called the New York Stock & Exchange Board with Anthony Stockholm as the first president. The stock exchanged started their trading at a rented room at 40 Wall Street. After that location was destroyed by the Great Fire of New York in 1835, the Exchange moved to a temporary location. It changed its name to its present name, the New York Stock Exchange, in 1863.

Today the New York Stock Exchange is spread across several buildings. The NYSE trading floor is located at 11 Wall Street. The main building of the stock exchange, however, is located at 18 Broad Street. It was built in 1903 at a cost of $4 million. The front façade features six stately columns with Corinthian capitals. This main building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978, as was the building at 11 Wall Street.
