Bloomingdale's is a chain of upscale American department stores owned by Macy's, Inc. Its Manhattan flagship store is located at 59th Street, between 3rd Avenue and Lexington Avenue. During Queen Elizabeth II's visit to New York City in the 1970s, traffic had to be reversed on Lexington Avenue so the Queen could exit her vehicle on its right side and enter the store by its main entrance.

Altogether, Bloomingdale's presently has 36 stores across the United States. It is at the same average price level with Lord & Taylor and Nordstrom, and slightly below that of Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Barneys New York.

Bloomingdale's was started in 1861 by two brothers, Joseph and Lyman G. Bloomingdale, selling hoop-skirts in their Ladies Notions' Shop on Manhattan's Lower East Side. They were the sons of Benjamin Bloomingdale, a Bavarian-born salesman who had lived in North Carolina and Kansas, and settled in New York City. The Bloomingdales opened their East Side Bazaar in 1872, selling a variety of garments and European fashions. As the business grew, it moved in 1886 to 59th Street and Lexington Avenue, anticipating the northern movement of New York's upper and middle classes. By the 1920s, the store covered the entire city block.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
