Nampa is located 20 miles (32 km) to the west of Boise, at an elevation of 2,516 ft (767 m). The city observes the Mountain Time Zone (UTC-7) and in summer the Mountain Summer Time Zone (UTC-6). Warmest month is July, with average high temperature of 91°F (32.8°C) while January is the coldest month at 21°F (-6.1°C). December and January receive the highest precipitation, though mostly in the form of snow.
The city of Nampa had its beginnings in the early 1880's, spurred by the construction of the Oregon Short Line Railroad that passed through it. The railroad is so much a part of the city that its roads were constructed to be perpendicular to the railway tracks. This was deliberate on the part of Nampa founder Alexander Duffes, to prevent mishaps involving people crossing the railway tracks.
