The history of Livingston can be traced to the settlement called Benson's Landing, which is located on the Yellowstone River 3 miles (4.8 km) downstream from the site of modern Livingston. As with many of the cities in Montana, its establishment was due to the construction of the Northern Pacific Railway. The site was originally called Clark City and then renamed Livingston, after a director of the railway, Johnston Livingston.

Livingston experiences a continental climate. Hottest months are July and August, with average high temperatures of 85°F (29°C). January is the coldest month, when the average low drops to 16°F (-9°C). Livingston gets the most rain in May, at 2.83 in (71.9 mm).
