Kearney, Nebraska
Go BackKearney is the county seat of Buffalo County in central Nebraska. It covers 11.2 sq mi (29 sq km) and has a population of 31,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is home to the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Kearney began in the 19th century as a settlement called Dobytown, which is about 2 miles to the southeast of the present town. The town was relocated and renamed after Fort Kearny - which in turn was named after General Stephen W. Kearny. The town was however spelled with an additional "e", said to have been added by mistake.
